“You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy.”
Psalm 61:3
Deep within the human heart lies a desire to feel secure. Safe from evil. Protected from enemies.
I recently had the opportunity to travel along the castle-studded Rhine River.
On the voyage, we passed fancy, fairytale castles as well as damp, dilapidated stone structures. One common theme stood out: they were all fortifications, usually built atop a hill. Often, builders surrounded the castle with thick walls, made strong to keep the enemy out.
Inhabitants often stockpiled an array of weapons and suits of heavy metal armor.
In the event of an invasion, the people would sometimes climb a ladder to a high tower, then remove the ladder and hide out until the enemy left.
They craved security and protection.
But even the highest walls were sometimes breached, and the heaviest armor failed to protect.
Over the centuries, our methods may have changed, but our needs are the same. We, too, want safety and protection from evil.
Instead of high walls, we install alarms and cameras around our homes, then lock the doors. We have armed guards in public places and security checkpoints at airports. We expect our government to make laws to keep us safe, though we don’t always agree on how to bring that about. Build a wall? Pass gun-control legislation?
I, for one, like to play it safe. I was never a Girl Scout, but the “Be Prepared” motto resonates with me. When I travel, I over-plan, over-pack, and double check everything in an effort to have a safe trip.
But before leaving on our trip down the Rhine, God reminded me of Psalm 121:
I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.
I can purchase the trip insurance, put my passport in an anti-theft pouch, pack raingear and sunscreen and sturdy shoes for protection, but ultimately, my safety in in God’s hands.
Our true help, hope, and source of safety lies in our relationship with God.
He is our strong tower.
